MITZVAH CORP SEEKING VOLUNTEERS

On Sunday, November 9th, a group of Kadima kids spent a fun afternoon cooking meals for Mitzvah Corps. Many thanks to Kadima advisor, Kathy Packer, organizer and shopper Michele Appelbaum and volunteers, Julie Ellenhorn, Janine Jacobs, Efrem Krisher, Linda Krisher, Julie Shusterman and Debra Mailman for helping in the kitchen. A good time was had by all and now we have ten meals ready to go when we have a congregant in need!

Over the past few months, Mitzvah Corps has begun to build a group of reliable volunteers who will make sure that no congregants needs go unmet. Mitzvah Corps activities have included sending dozens of get well cards, providing transportation to high holiday services, rides to work and medical appointments and meals for several congregants undergoing cancer treatment, surgery or sitting shiva.

Mitzvah Corps serves many functions in our congregation and we are slowly expanding the services we offer. Several volunteer needs are listed below. If one fits the bill for you, please step up! If you have less time to commit, you can still sign up to be on our “on call” email list. When we have a need for a congregant who lives geographically close to you, we will contact you. These calls usually involve meals for those who are ill or transportation to medical appointments or the synagogue.

Current volunteer needs include:

  • Sending get well cards to congregants who are ill on a weekly basis.

  • Pay a monthly visit to a congregant who is housebound and would like companionship. Children welcome.

  • Make a monthly visit to a congregant at Kline Galland. Delivery of cookies or challah for Shabbat is encouraged! Children welcome.

  • Neighborhood Coordinators are our first point of contact when someone needs meals or transportation. We have volunteers in South Bellevue, Redmond and West Seattle. If you live elsewhere and would like to be a coordinator, let us know. When someone needs meals, we would ask you to email or call the volunteers in your area, arrange a meal and delivery schedule, get driving directions and be the contact with the family in need.

  • Desktop publishing your thing? We want to start a quarterly newsletter/flyer that lets our volunteers know what Mitzvah Corps has been doing and thanks our volunteers.

  • Research a resource guide for those who are facing illness or a change in their living or driving status. This could include resources like the Metro access bus, Meals on Wheels, JFS, how to access home health care, etc.

These are a few of the things that Mitzvah Corps is working on. If you can help or have other suggestions for us, contact Mitzvah Corps co-chairs, Julie Ellenhorn at ello3@comcast.net or Michele Appelbaum at michappel@comcast.net
