We’ll
start the summer series on July 7 with a good laugh at
a little known British comedy called SIXTY-SIX.
The year is 1966 and for a 12-year-old North London
kid, the biggest day of his life is looming: his Bar
Mitzvah. It’s also the year that the World Cup Finals
are in London. Can one affect the other? Don’t even
ask. |

Our
2nd film is a good old-fashioned love story, EVERY
TIME WE SAY GOODBYE. In one of Tom Hanks’ earliest
films, he plays an American serving with the RAF
before the US got into WWII. Wounded over N. Africa,
he is sent to recuperate in Palestine where he meets a
young Sephardic woman. The chemistry is right, but the
times aren’t. |

We’ll
close out the series with an Israeli-made documentary,
THE CEMETERY CLUB, about a group of Holocaust
survivors living in Jerusalem. They meet weekly at a
beautiful park in the Mt. Herzl National Cemetery.
There they read poetry, discuss philosophy, share
lunch, gossip, and enjoy each other’s company - and
quarrel a bit. This poignant film follows the
writer/director’s grandmother and great-aunt over a
five year period.
