Struggling to connect the themes of the High Holidays to your young children in a meaningful way? HNT, The PJ Library, and the Stroum Jewish Community Center are thrilled to present an innovative High Holiday experience geared to families with children ages 3 - Kindergarten.

On Rosh Hashanah you will meet Daring Danny, our brave hero, who demonstrates through dynamic experiences that it takes humility, bravery, and graciousness to be truly sorry. This whole-body interactive “non-service” is based on the concept that children learn by doing. Parent education materials will ensure that these Jewish values can be implemented at home throughout the year.

Tickets are free for HNT members and will be mailed out with the regular HNT High Holy Day tickets. Non-HNT member families are welcome and can purchase tickets for $36. All families are asked to register.

With the help of a prominent Israeli journalist, A Precious Life chronicles the struggle of an Israeli pediatrician and a Palestinian mother to get treatment for her baby, who suffers from an incurable genetic disease.

It's family shabbat!

Simchat Shabbat is HNT's Friday night program for families with children ages newborn-5. We will meet in the Sanctuary for a song with Cantor Kurland. We will then move to Room 3 to� create some of the "shabbat feelin!"� We will join the B'Yachad crowd for a delicious community-style dinner.

B’Yachad (3rd - 5th grade) & 6th Grade� families will� join the main congregation� in the Sanctuary for a special family friendly service. Then we will enjoy dinner with the Simchat Shabbat families.

B'Yachad and Simchat Shabbat are open to all regardless of membership or Religious School enrollment status.

Dinner is free for families registered for the B’Yachad Program and for 6th grade families. All others: Adults $10, Children 2 and older: $7.50, Children less than 2: Free. Please bring a tallit. �

Tahlia Edgar-Chalker is the daughter of Adrian Chalker and Orna Ann Edgar, and the granddaughter of Jack Bridger Chalker, Jill Chalker z”l, Raphael Edgar, and Bracha Etgar. She is in the 7th grade at the Jewish Day School, where she was a member of JDS’s first pre-school class. Tahlia is a passionate ballet dancer: this will be her ninth year as a student in the Pacific Northwest Ballet School and her fourth dancing in PNB’s annual production of The Nutcracker. Tahlia enjoys volunteering as a teacher’s assistant for pre-school aged classes at PNB School. For her Bat Mitzvah project, Tahlia joins Ariel Simpson in helping the Mitvah Store at the Netzach Yisrael Elementary School in Kiryat Malachi, Israel. The majority of the students in the school are from low income Ethiopian Israeli families, and the Mitzvah Store is a place where students can redeem their “good behavior points” for snacks, toys, school supplies, and clothing,among other much needed items.�

Ariel Miriam Simpson is the daughter of Amy Wasser-Simpson and Chuck Simpson z”l, and the sister of Harry and Gillian Simpson. She is the granddaughter of Stephen and Barbara Wasser of Schenectady, NY and Jean Simpson z”l and Charlie Simpson z”l. She is the great-granddaughter of Eve Wasser z”l and Harry Wasser z”l. Ariel is in the 7th grade at the Jewish Day School, where she is on the volleyball team. Ariel loves being part of the Eastside Dream Elite Cheer Team where this is her fourth year participating on both Power Squad and Dream Team. She hopes to become a junior coach for the squad one day. Ariel loves her family and friends a great deal and becomes very determined and focused when she wants something, like a part in a play or to do well on a test. Ariel, along with her Bat Mitzvah partner Tahlia Edgar-Chalker, has chosen to support the Netzach Yisrael Mitzvah Store in Kiryat Malachi, Israel.�

Richard Goldman is the son of Linda & Michael Goldman and older brother of Dan and Steven. His grandparents are Sarah Bensimon z”l and Eliezar Bensimon z”l of Montreal, Canada; and Bobby Goldman of Boston, MA and Richard Goldman z”l. Richard is a 7th grader at the Jewish Day School. Last year he was on the student council and greatly enjoyed the experience. He is very active and enjoys many sports, especially basketball and football. Richard is an avid reader, and likes spending time with his family and friends. He also enjoys working with his hands; this summer he was hired to do painting and gardening. He also has an interest in aviation. Richard thanks everyone who has supported him during his preparations to become a Bar Mitzvah. He has had fun preparing for it and is excited to celebrate his simchah.

Jordan Sherman is the son of Josh & Alyssa Sherman, brother of Julia, and grandson of Susan Weinstein and Edward Rauschkolb of Gainesville, FL. Jordan is in the 7th grade at Pine Lake Middle School. Jordan loves to be outdoors, whether he is camping, hiking, fishing, biking, riding his scooter or just looking for bugs outside with his friends. He enjoys reading and sharing facts about animals. Jordan has been in Boy Scouts since the 1st grade, but now he is in the Pine Lake Middle School Choir and loves to sing. For his Bar Mitzvah project, he has collected money for the Humane Society, planted trees, and built bird houses for a local park and donated his time to the Eastside Baby Corner. Jordan is looking forward to celebrating his simchah with family and friends from across the country.

The park ranger will lead us on an investigative exploration of the forest in our backyard. We will learn the lifecycle of a tree by acting out the different phases of growth, from seed to big standing tree to rotten log, use our senses to describe the different types of trees, and learn to recognize trees in different phases of their lifecycle. We will also learn how to detect wildlife from evidence they leave behind, and look for this evidence on a hike through the park. We will wrap up by creating a forest mural and enjoying some Tu B’Shavat snacks!

In Memory of Ellen Yusim and other loved ones

This annual event honors the memory of Ellen Yusim z”l, a teenager and congregant whose family’s resettlement from the Former Soviet Union was sponsored by our synagogue. Ellen succumbed to Leukemia at the age of 16 and it was her final request to have an annual blood drive to help others in need of transfusions. It also honors the memory of our other loved ones whose lives have been impacted by blood-related diseases.

Every day it takes more than 800 donors to meet the transfusion needs of Western Washington. Many of our congregants have been the fortunate recipients of the gift of blood. A healthy blood supply relies on the diligence of the public to donate.

We are making it easy to perform this mitzvah - contact the office at 206-232-8555 to set up your appointment or just drop in.

As in years past, HNT will be doing a full Megillah reading, interspersed with antics by HNT’s own Not Ready for Shul Players, and accompanied by the live band that has been rocking the shul for over eight years.

However, this year we will be featuring Twitter during the shpiel itself! Make sure you have Twitter set up on your phone (step-by-step instructions are below), then show up at shul with your smart phone. A screen behind the stage will list any tweet marked #HNTPurim, so you can tweet during the show (“Booo, Hamon!”) and be a part of the action!

And if that isn’t enough, we are going to tweet questions at random intervals throughout the shpiel. Whoever gets the most correct answers wins a kosher bottle of wine and a free bag of delicious hamantashen from HNT’s Women's League to take home.

Before the shpiel, we will have costume parades for young and old, as well as Purim treats, and end the night with hamantashen made by HNT’s Women’s League.

You can also listen to the whole Megillah again (without the shpiel) at 7:00 AM Thursday, March 8, during the Morning Minyan.

Perspectives of a Young Israeli

Ran Bar-Yoshafat is StandWithUs Northwest’s 2012 Shaliach (Israeli representative). While he is at HNT, he will speak during services, and he will be at the kiddush to speak informally. He will share his personal experiences in the IDF, the Israeli Knesset, and give his perspective on current Israeli hot topics such as security and the secular-religious divide.

He will be working with StandWithUs in the Seattle area until June, talking and teaching about Israel, providing forums for dialogue, presenting an Israeli’s perspective on his country and the Mideast conflict. Ran hopes to reach out to as many people as possible during his time in the Northwest, and is looking forward to hearing from you. Click here for more information.

Roee Horowitz is the son of Revital & Amnon Horowitz; the brother of Yotam, Nadav and Barak; and the grandson of Valentine Shiri of Hertzeliya, David Shiri z”l, Hanna Horowitz of Tel-Aviv, and Itzchak Horowitz z”l. Roee is a student at The Green Village school in Tel-Aviv. Roee enjoys cooking and baking. He loves playing Xbox games with his friends. He loves spending summers at Camp Solomon Schechter, playing tennis, and just spending time with his brothers. Roee is very excited to be sharing this important day with his JDS friend, Izzy Harris, who he has known since pre-school.

Izzy Harris is the son of Anne & Ed Harris; the brother of Gabriela Bloom and Sam Harris; and grandson of Marian Jaski of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Jan Toorn Jaski z”l, and Anita & Richard Harris of Boca Raton, FL. Izzy is in the 7th grade at the Jewish Day School. He enjoys hip hop dancing, ballet, piano and spending summers at Camp Solomon Schechter. He is a member of the Student Council at the JDS, and has been accepted at the Summer Program at The School of Ballet Chicago. A portion of the gifts Izzy receives for his Bar Mitzvah will be given to GIFT, a non-profit organization that provides free medical clinics for the Maya population in Guatemala.

AIPAC Speaker Avi Jorisch: Preventing a Nuclear Iran
Avi Jorisch is the founder of the Red Cell Intelligence Group, a consulting and training firm that specializes in national security issues relating to terrorism, illicit finance and radical Islam. In addition, he is a Senior Fellow for Counter-terrorism at the American Foreign Policy Council and Fellow at the Air Force Special Operations University. He also serves on the Advisory Board of United Against a Nuclear Iran (UANI), and has been a liaison to the Department of Homeland Security and a consultant for the Department of Defense.
Mr. Jorisch has traveled extensively in the Middle East and is a frequent media commentator on threat finance and radical Islam, publishing in influential media outlets including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and Al-Arabiya.net.

Mr. Jorisch will speak during services, and we will have a Q&A session during kiddish after services.

This year, the HNT community is partnering with other several agencies and care providers in a day of volunteerism. Below are a list of the organizations.

Registration is simple!

First, sign up for the project that interests you, as an individual or a family, using our registration form (below). After we receive the requests we will organize the teams and contact you to let you know what to expect on the day of service and the location.

On April 29 we will all meet in the Feinberg Social Hall at 9:15 AM for a light continental breakfast, then depart for our service projects to create good will in the greater community.

For Frankel Religious School students this is an all-school day of service for families to plan together. Instead of dropping off your child in the morning, park and come in together to meet your group, eat, and caravan to your assigned destination. Be sure to plan with your friends to work together. Project assignment is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Partnering Organizations:
Eastside Baby Corner (Issaquah): This agency provides food, clothing, strollers, diapers, beds and other goods for low-income and homeless children living in our communities. We will help by sorting and organizing donations in the warehouse.
Habitat for Humanity (Bellevue): This group builds houses using primarily volunteer labor, and sells them at cost to working families in Seattle and South King County. We will assist customers, stock shelves, and help clean and organize the store.
HopeLink (Bellevue and Kirkland): This agency helps families in crisis make progress toward self-sufficiency. We will restock shelves and sort or repackage donations in the warehouse.
House of Hope (North Bend): This women and children’s shelter is where families in crisis are assisted with counseling, education, employment, and school enrollment for the children. We will help the agency with maintenance, cleaning, and other projects.
Personal Needs Bags for Harborview Medical Center (HNT): Families of those receiving care at Harborview Medical Center often arrive in moments of crisis, without time to think of their own personal comfort or welfare. We will assemble bags with personal needs items at HNT, to donate to Harborview Medical Center.
Puzzles for Local Hospitals (HNT): We will make jigsaw puzzles at HNT for pediatric cancer patients. Only volunteers in good health may participate, to protect sick children with compromised immune systems.
HNT's Wittenberg Waterfront Park & Mediation Garden (HNT): Help us with our own peaceful and playful areas at HNT. We will plant flowers, and update and clean up both areas.

J-Serve, the National Day of Jewish Youth Service, is a program created by teens for teens, and provides Jewish participants with the opportunity to fulfill age-old Jewish values. By engaging in community service, J-Serve participants are fulfilling the ideals of gemilut chasadim (acts of loving kindness), tzedakah (just and charitable giving), and tikkun olam (the idea that we have a duty to help fix a broken world).

In Seattle, this year’s theme of anti-bullying will play a part in all of our different service projects. All participants will get snacks, a t-shirt, other swag, volunteer hours, and the amazing feeling of making the world a better place.

Fern and her mother visited Germany to rediscover their past and face the Holocaust tragedy that haunted them. Motherland was featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Her second book, Is it Night or Day?, is an account of her mother’s immigration to the United States.

This month's family Shabbat is special because we will be welcoming visiting, injured Israeli soldiers from the Hope for Heroism program, and hear their stories of friendship. This will be a congregation-wide event.

Simchat Shabbat is HNT's Friday night program for families with children ages newborn-5. We will meet in the Sanctuary for a song with Cantor Kurland. We will then move to Room 3 to create some of the "Shabbat feeling!" We will join the B'Yachad crowd for a delicious community-style dinner.

B’Yachad (3rd - 5th grade) families will join the main congregation in the Sanctuary for a special family friendly service. Then we will enjoy dinner with the Simchat Shabbat families.

B'Yachad and Simchat Shabbat are open to all regardless of membership or FRS enrollment status.

Registration for this event is required.

Dinner is free for families registered for the B’Yachad Program.

Radio Days is a comedy written and directed by Woody Allen. While he does not appear in the film, there is no doubt that the central character is Woody as a child. The First Basket is documentary about the significntly Jewish origins of the NBA in 1946. The League was an outgrowth of Jewish neighborhood leagues in New York City and of the South Philadelphia Hebrew Association (SPHA). The stories of Nat Holman, Sammy Kaplan and Red Auerbach and the many others Jew coaching and playing are told.

All films are at Herzl-Ner Tamid.

HNT Youth Lounge

Ran Bar-Yoshafat, StandWithUs shaliach to the Northwest, will speak about his experience in teaching about Israel and what we can do to continue his work. He has wide experience in presenting Israel to all kinds of audiences in friendly, neutral and hostile settings and can help us greatly to do the same. Everyone welcome.
We will also celebrate and honor our dedicated WL volunteers as Lana Finegold finishes her term as WL President. Regional President Anne Nicholson will also attend.

“What Do You Hunger For?”
An Exploration of Jewish Identity Over Dessert

This year on Shavuot HNT is going to sate your hunger not only with Torah, but also with dessert! Our teachers will be offering classes paired with desserts they feel represent their topic. You will have an opportunity to choose classes during two sessions. Below we have a sampling of the offerings to whet your appetite.

Daniel Sergei Gladner is the son of Bruce & Peggy Gladner, the brother of Natanya, and grandson of Pauline Dean of Post Falls, ID, Wayne Dean z"l and Dorothy Dean z"l , Evelyn Gladner of Alpharetta, GA, Phil Gladner z"l and Nettie Gladner z"l. Danny is a 7th grader at the Jewish Day School. He enjoys skiing, snowboarding, playing soccer, basketball, and especially baseball. Danny is an aspiring DJ, and also enjoys listening to music and hanging out with friends, and attending Camp Solomon Schechter. Becoming a Bar Mitzvah on this date is special to Danny as June 2 is the birthday of his Great Uncle Murray and his Grandma Nettie z"l. Danny is donating a portion of his Bar Mitzvah gifts to "Save a Child’s Heart," which works to improve the quality of pediatric cardiac care for children from developing countries.

Nathan Vincenti is the son of Dominique & Lionel Vincenti, brother of Ana, and grandson of Evelyne & Dominique Vincenti and Monique Duclos. Nathan is a vibrant and spirited student at Odle Middle School. He loves and excel in science, math and technology, but has equal passion for theatrical arts, dancing, and singing. Nathan also throws his energy into baseball. Nathan is keen on personally contributing to his immediate community. He volunteers at the school tutoring students or offering support to PTA events and organization. It is not surprising that for his Mitzvah project he decided to visit, bring joy and build bonds with elder Jewish citizens in our local nursing homes.

Gabe is a 7th grader at Kirkland Junior High, where he plays tuba in the concert band. Gabe is currently working on his Star rank in Boy Scouts. Benedicte Knudson is the daughter of Ellen Knudson & Dan Knudson, granddaughter to Rosette Teitel of New York, Bernard Tucker z’’l, Rich and Kathy Knudson of California, Carol Sanders of California, and, big sister to Asa. Benedicte is a 7th grader at Chinook Middle School, where she is a member of the Chinook chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. She enjoys traveling, baking, fashion, running, dog sitting, pottery, going to camp in the summer, and is an avid reader. For her Bat Mitzvah project, she will be supporting the Funny Farm in Monroe.

Dalia Puterman is the daughter of Cheryl & Jeff Puterman, sister of Shira, and granddaughter of Rachel Puterman of Montreal, Abraham Puterman z”l, and Veronica and Harold Rosen of Montreal. Dalia is in 7th Grade at Pacific Cascade Middle School. She enjoys cheerleading, volleyball, hanging out with her friends, listening to music, playing with her dog, Farfel, and spending her summers at Camp Solomon Schechter with her best friends. Dalia is an active volunteer, and currently, she is involved with National Charity League and The Friendship Circle.

Once a month, HNT provides a full range of Shabbat programs for children of all ages:

The Playground Minyan, for parents and children newborn to 5-years-old, meets in Gan Danny (Room 3). Rabbi Levy will lead Shabbat songs and Kiddush at 11:00 AM
Our Mini-Minyan, K-2 program, meets with Rachel Yedidia in Room 1 at 10:30 AM

Candlelight Tisha B’Av service and reading of Eichah

Memory is one of the most vital parts of being human. Every year we gather together along with Jewish communities around the world to remember our tragedies and to commemorate them. The Jewish people lost the first and second Temples on the 9th of the Hebrew month of Av, and there have been many tragedies that have befallen our people on this date. Join us this year for a meaningful and solemn commemoration of these tragedies, as we go from darkness to light.

This Baccalaureate Service is an inter-faith program sponsored by the Mercer Island PTSA and The Mercer Island Clergy Association. All Mercer Island graduating seniors, regardless of whether they attend MIHS, are invited to gather as we hear students and community representatives celebrate their journey and bless them on their way.

Kadima is going to help with Operation Teddy Bear at the Pinwheel Regional Convention! We will be making bears for traumatized children who need comfort or don't have any toys to hug. We will provide an opportunity for USYers and Kadimaniks to work together during this "hands-on mitzvah" project. When we're all done, you'll be able to provide a wonderful cuddly gift to a child either locally or in Israel!

Every year we have a special Shavuot ceremony: Families with babies born since last Shavuot participate in a group aliyah, and big brothers and sisters receive a blessing under the chuppah with their new siblings. Parents of new babies should RSVP to Carol Reynolds.
